HISTORY of Antyoday Anath Ashram

This gentleman, Balaram Karan had a medicine shop in his village Paushi, and he regularly travelled about 20 kms to Contai, the nearest town, for supplies.

One day on the way to Contai, Balaram found a child crying at the roadside, with apparently no one beside her. On his return from town a few hours later, he still found the child at the same spot. He enquired about the child at that locality, and learnt that the child has no one to look after, the father died of overdose of local "toddy" and the widowed mother wanders about insane. Balaram said, if no one has any objection he may take the child with him to his home. And so he did, after leaving his address with the locals.

In villages, words spread by mouth like wildfire, and Balaram's kind act was no exception. Whenever an orphaned child was found, people requested Balaram to take care of them - and he always obliged, in fact he still does even today! As his "children" grew in number, he found it hard to balance his business with looking after them. He sold off his shop so that he could devote more time collecting donations in cash or kind for the children.

Today he has his hands more than full with 70 children, all supported under one roof - the Antyoday Anath Ashram. It is a registered association under the Govt. of West Bengal, India, and he is one of the nine association members.
